Renewable Natural Gas (RNG), also called biomethane, is a sustainable energy solution offered by FortisBC. It is produced from biogas originating from decomposing organic matter from landfills, agricultural waste, and wastewater from treatment facilities. This waste-to-energy process involves capturing the biogas, cleaning it to meet conventional natural gas quality standards, and then injecting it into the North American gas grid. Once in the system, RNG mixes with conventional natural gas, meaning it cannot be directed to a specific customer. However, every volume of RNG added to the system displaces an equivalent amount of fossil-based natural gas, contributing to an overall reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. FortisBC's current RNG portfolio has lifecycle emissions of -22 gCO2e/MJ, which is below British Columbia's regulatory threshold, supporting the province's climate action goals.
RNG is not delivered to a specific location. It is injected into the North American gas system where it mixes with conventional natural gas, thereby reducing the overall amount of fossil gas in the system.
